On August 15, 2001, SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation) conducted a formal equipment move-in ceremony at SMIC's FAB 1. Since groundbreaking work began last August, SMIC has completed two fabs and numerous office and support buildings. With a year of world-class constructions efforts, relentless safety and quality standards, and the latest equipment installations, SMIC have written another new chapter in China's semiconductor industry.
The ceremony, presented by President and CEO Dr. Richard Chang, began with a round of traditional firecrackers personally lit by President Chang, Mr. Marco Mora (Vice President of Operations) and others. Under the festive firecracker sparks, SMIC successfully moved in first load of equipment for FAB 1. Prior to this, machines for Photo Mask Shop already moved in on July 23 in FAB 3B.
President Richard Chang spoke cheerfully to the audience, touching on his remarks a year ago regarding SMIC's priority of safety and quality in our work. As planned, SMIC has successfully completed multiple cleanrooms in FAB 1 and FAB 3B. Based on world standards, SMIC's efficient and swift construc tion efforts matches up to the world's best. There are three main factors that SMIC is grateful for: fortuitous timing, favorable location, and outstanding employees. Today's success would not be possible without the help and support from the Shanghai Government, various Pudong New Area and Zhang Jiang Development Park authorities, and all of our employees' endless efforts.
Chi Deh Crane Engineering teams were onsite to complete the move-in procedures and successfully unpacked the first equipment set, a Photo Lithography Track. Following the packaging-disassembling process, SMIC Senior Fellow Dr. Christopher Chang led all participants in a prayer of peace and blessings for all of the employees and equipment. The ceremony concluded in a high spirits as everyone sang the song "Tomorrow Will be Better". SMIC will continue to aim our core values in safety and quality assurance as we work towards our goals of full production.
Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), poised to become China's first full service open-IC foundry, is building one of the world's best wafer fab facilities. Covering over 62 hectares of land, this massive project will encompass at least 6 wafer fab foundries, an office/ support facility, and a residential community with schools and restaurants for employees and their families. Its headquarters is located in Shanghai's new hi-tech development area for micro-electronics-the Pudong New Area ZhangJiang Hi-Tech Park. With a total first phase investment of 1.48 billion US dollars, SMIC is equipped with the most advanced equipment and technology in wafer production and maskshop services. SMIC aims to construct some of the world's best wafer fabs to serve worldwide customers with top quality products and dedicated services.
